Mombasa Named Fourth Most Popular Destination for UK Holidaymakers

Mombasa, Kenya has become a top destination for UK tourists, rising to fourth place in the UK Post Office Holiday Costs Barometer. The survey compared the costs of common tourist items across eight destinations and found Mombasa offered good value for money, with an average daily spend of €58.3 (Sh8,500) compared to the most expensive destination, Reykjavik, Iceland, with a daily spend of €198.4 (Sh28,924).

The report shows that UK holidaymakers are prioritizing spending on travel despite cost of living pressures, with 41% dipping into savings to fund their trips abroad. The demand for international travel has also been increasing as travel restrictions lift and more people become vaccinated.

According to data from the Kenya Tourism Board, just over a third of the 1.3 million international tourists who visited Kenya in the 11 months leading up to November 2021 came for holidays. In 2021, Kenya welcomed 870,465 arrivals, generating Sh146.5 billion in revenue, with an average spend of Sh168,300 per tourist.

Mombasa’s rise in the rankings reflects the importance of affordable destinations for UK tourists as they recover from the pandemic’s impact. This report highlights that UK tourists are seeking destinations that offer value for money and are budget-friendly.

Kenya and other tourist destinations are hopeful that the demand for international travel will continue to increase, and the tourism industry can begin to recover from the challenges posed by the pandemic.
