Celebrating World Radio Day in Kenya’s Coastal Region: A Guide to the Best Radio Stations
The theme for the 12th edition of World Radio Day, celebrated on February 13, 2023, is “Radio and Peace.” The day was proclaimed by UNESCO in 2011 and was later adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012.
Locally, Mombasa County will host the World Radio Day celebrations for 2023. The county is home to 15 radio stations and counting, with the majority of media houses broadcasting in Kiswahili and local dialects. The rich history of Mombasa includes being one of the first towns to have a radio station, Sauti ya Mvita when Kenya Broadcasting Services (KBS) was established in 1954. The commemoration provides a unique opportunity for stakeholders to discuss the theme and find solutions to the media’s challenges. The celebration will begin on February 10 and culminate on February 13 with a conference bringing together various partners and stakeholders.
